What's happening

• KITCHENER COMMITTEES: The City of Kitchener is seeking volunteers for 2-year terms on advisory committees, including Active Transportation and Trails. Applications are open until August 19.
• KITCHENER CONSTRUCTION: The City of Kitchener is updating its Development Manual that guides new construction. Development professionals and interested members of the public can weigh in by August 7.
• WATERLOO TREES: The City of Waterloo is seeking feedback on its Draft Urban Forest Management Strategy. A survey is open until August 24.
• BUILDING CODE: Ontario is looking for feedback on updating its building code, with comments open until August 14. (via Gil Meslin)

Walking, biking, and streets

• CBC (video): This past week, the City of Kitchener and the Downtown Kitchener Business Improvement Area held King Street Unplugged and transformed a section of King Street into a pedestrian-only area filled with various activities
• A resident created a video outlining a beginner-friendly bike ride that connects the Victoria Park ION Station to the Boardwalk, largely along Kitchener's new Route 1 (YouTube, via r/kitchener)
• CTVNews: New horse crossing signal during bridge construction in Woolwich. Drivers travelling along Northfield Drive East in Woolwich may notice a new and unusual traffic signal, one meant to keep both horses and their riders safe.
• Driver seriously injures e-scooter rider in collision along an infamous stretch of Northfield Drive in Waterloo (CTVNews)
• A cyclist was seriously injured in a car-bike collision on Katherine Street North in Woolwich Township (WRPS)
• One person was killed and four injured in a two vehicle crash at a 2-way stop intersection in Wilmot Township. (CityNews)

Transit

• Region of Waterloo: GRT will operate on a holiday schedule on Monday, August 3rd
• A June 2026 Metrolinx diagram shows that electrification for the Kitchener Line is only planned along the shared UP Express corridor (Metrolinx board, via Steve Munro)
• The federal government has announced a $1.95 billion investment in passenger train locomotive manufacturing, including assembling locomotives in Canada (Transport Canada, Stadler)
